    Overall takeaway:
Victory over self – your greatest and most important victory is to conquer yourself because MOST of your leadership are your problems.

Ralph Stayer, president of Johnsonville Foods: In most situations, I am the problem; my mentalities, my pictures, my expectations form the biggest obstacle to my success.

Lens: Who we are determines how we see others. We don’t see others as they are, we see them through the lens of who we are. For example, I saw myself as poor and not deserving any better, so I projected that onto God and resented that He “wanted me poor” and saw me as someone who did not deserve better – NOT true! This is why “hurt people hurt people,” and a certain level of healthiness is a must for leaders.

Mirror: The first person I must examine is myself. We need to be careful with statements like: “What is wrong with them.” When I was young, it took me a while before it dawned on me that people are not like me. And that is OK!

Confidence: The leader’s greatest asset. “If I don’t think that I can, I don’t think that I am.” Wow! Think about that statement. 85% of the people in the world lack confidence.

Greatest Discipline: You MUST think. 6 months, a year out, five years out. If you are going to think, you might as well think BIG.

Greatest Handicap: Pride. “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before the fall.” Proverbs 16:18 I believe Hitler lost the war because of his pride.

What changes for me: get emotional health assessment for future leaders; increase my think time.

  2. Followers think of themselves first, Leaders think of others first.
Greatest asset leaders possess is confidence- You cannot pass on what you don’t have. Confidence in a leader gives security to the follower.
If you have a place to think your thoughts- you’ll go to it. Thoughts have to be worked on and developed.Thinking demands different perspectives– need to stretch it with other thinkers. Bigger the thought, bigger the runway.
Leaders greatest hindrance is pride. Pride always breaks the law of connection.
for me: learn to speak with more confidence

Followers think of themselves first. Leaders think of others first.
Leading with confidence gives security to followers.
    Pride is greatest downfall.
if you have a place to think you will go there. Need to think with other thinkers.
for me- learn to speak with more confidence
